fit-PC2 small yet eligant yet still just an Atom

Ok so I have to admit something. I have been thinking about getting a EEE Box to be my new home theater system. The thing that has been holding me back is-well the Atom processor. I have been scared to death that I am gonna buy the thing and it not do all of what I want it to do . Well now this fit-PC2 thing has come out that is making it even hader for me to stick with my old e-Machine under the TV. The specs on the new puppy are:
  • 1.6GHz x86 CPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • SATA hard disk
  • DVI with graphics acceleration
  • High definition audio
  • LAN and WLAN
  • 6 USB ports

I know it is still the atom but it has the power to push HD believe it or not! I may just have to give in on this one and load MythTV on the sucker.

President Obama's Press Conference

Oops: Colbert wins NASA space station name contest

WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA's online contest to name a new room at the international space station went awry. Comedian Stephen Colbert won.

The name "Colbert" beat out NASA's four suggested options in the space agency's effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.

NASA's mistake was allowing write-ins. Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report," to write in his name. And they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes. Nearly 1.2 million votes were cast by the time the contest ended Friday.

NASA reserves the right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters "the most consideration."

I rest my case lol.

Old School Reading Rainbow Theme

Been seeing/hearing Levar Burton all over the TWIT's recently so I just had to pay homage. Yeah I know he was Jordy on Star Trek too, but this is where I got to know him. Of course now I hear from him everyday through twitter. I am just so freaking impressed that he is a techno geek!!

Oh please Apple gods smile down upon us lol

Apple iPhone 3.0 event tomorrow might reveal a tablet

The Apple iPhone 3.0 event tomorrow might have more surprises than are immediately apparent. Especially in relation to a tablet. Here's my hypothesis why:

I've got a pretty good idea that Apple is going to be releasing more iPod touch/iPhone platform devices. Why? Well, for one, they've said so in a job posting at the end of last year.

The software developed by the networking team runs on a broad spectrum of platforms, including Macs and Windows, and from servers down to a growing number of embedded devices including iPhone.

apple, tablet, arm

So, that "growing number of embedded devices" I think will be a ten inch tablet. The ten inches figure I get from the three different reports out of China that Apple is developing a touch screen in the 9.5-10 inch area for release in Q3 (summer).

I don't think Apple is going to try to compete with the Netbook market directly. Apple has a big lead in touch technology and probably needs to innovate in other ways rather that release a similar type of product to a mature market.

The timing? Well, if this thing has to be put on a device in late Summer, Apple will probably want some software to run on it...probably even an App Store. If so, developers will need at least a few months to get their apps to run on this new little device. That means they should probably start right about now.

Then there has been the persistent "premium app store" rumors. Paying $20 for an iPhone app seems silly to me with so many great $5-$10 apps all around. But if an Apple tablet can handle hi res 3D gaming, it might make more sense. Current App Store apps should also run on it but in a resolution independence type of mode. This type of app would also be able to play on a new AppleTV OS with App store as well.

I think Apple's devices (even if not a tablet) will be based on the ARM Cortex A8 architecture like that of the Palm Pre. The video card will be from Imagination and will hopefully use some of that OpenCL Apple has been touting in its desktop Snow Leopard OS.

If not tomorrow, then soon hopefully.

Paul sings Nessun Dorma

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you

English Translation of "Nessun Dorma"
Nobody shall sleep!...
Nobody shall sleep!
Even you, o Princess,
in your cold room,
watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know...
No!...No!...
On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

Office 2003 Menu in Office 2007 - (Repost From Lifehacker)

UBitMenu Brings the Microsoft Office 2003 Menu Back to Office 2007

Windows only: We love Office 2007's ribbon for its impressive keyboard shortcut integration, but for those of you who miss the Microsoft Office 2003 menu that's entrenched in your muscle memory, UBitMenu can help.

This plug-in adds a new Menu entry to the Office 2007 ribbon (specifically in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). When clicked, your ribbon displays the classic Office 2003 menu, complete with the buttons and file menus you're used to from your old Office 2003 install. As Samer from FreewareGenius points out, not every single bit of functionality remains in the UBitMenu toolbar as is available in Office 2003—due mostly to changes in Office—but most of the features you're used to remain in all their glory.

Even if you're keen on the Office 2007 ribbon, UBitMenu is a nice tool to ease the transition from 2003 to 2007 while you're polishing your new Office mojo. UBitMenu is a free download for non-commercial use.

Apple shows no love to Math Geeks

Because I'm an Applied Math major I obviously have to type a bunch of crap using a slew of equations. Now as yall know I am a Mac head, well between you and me Apple continues to disappoint on the Math front with continued lack of support. Microsoft Office for PC has had Equation editor built in for years but no love on the Mac side even in Office 2008. So during the keynote this year one of the feature included in Pages in iWork 09 was finally an equation editor well, that was a bit of a stretch. What they really meant to say is it supports MathType, if you freggin buy MathType separately for $99 (or $57 for academic pricing). I am usually all about defending Apple like Equation Editor not being a part of Mac office being Microsoft's fault, but this Pages crap is completely on Apple. And dont give me that crap about using LaTeX which is opensource because Apple is supposed to be better than that. So on behalf of Math Geeks everywhere that have to deal with lack of support from Apple, Brother Steve, please do something to correct this!!! Now!!! (Ok as soon as you get better)

Obama is a Mac head like me!!! - I had to re-post this!

Mac-loving Obama staff confronts Windows White House reality

By Erica Sadun | Published: January 22, 2009 - 10:20AM CT

This week, the White House became a switcher. As the new presidential team took over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, they were met with outdated equipment still apparently running the sturdy old Windows XP and Windows 2000, as well as a host of bureaucratic rules meant to ensure that all official work at the White House can be properly recorded according to the Presidential Records Act.

The Obama team has long been known for using Apple equipment. President Obama himself uses a Mac laptop, as does his media team, which according to the Washington Post is now facing the daunting prospect of updating the West Wing to modern equipment and doing so while complying with government regulations.

The Post article quipped that "if the Obama campaign represented a sleek, new iPhone kind of future, the first day of the Obama administration looked more like the rotary-dial past." It seems as if the White House is making great strides forward technologically in short order. This week alone, the Whitehouse website was updated with a new look and an official blog. Can a Mac-friendly West Wing be far behind?

Stargate Universe is comming this Summer!!!

OK so tonight was the series finale of Stargate Atlantis. Right as the worst series finale ever words were starting to exit my lips an announcment for Stargate Universe was dropped. Wholy crap on a fun stick it is on again lol. It gives me just enough time to finish watching SG-1 so that I will know the whole story before the next chapter begins. I am so excited!!! So anyway here is what I found on good ole Wikipedia about the new show:

Stargate Universe is an upcoming science fiction television series, part of the Stargate franchise. The series was green lit on August 22, 2008 and is scheduled to debut as a two- or three-hour movie and then begin regular weekly airings on SCI FI in summer 2009. Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper will serve as executive producers and writers. The projected film start of Stargate Universe is February 4, 2009.

Stargate Universe follows the adventures of a team of explorers from Earth, who find the Ancient spaceship Destiny and must fend for themselves aboard the ship in the far reaches of the universe as they are unable to return to Earth. The show will be firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology and take place during the present time.

Tripod - Gonna Make You Happy

Microsoft's keynote at CES music act... hmmm though cool I think Tony Benett a la Apple keynote at Macworld trumps Tripod lol

Windows 7 Public Beta to start Tomorrow!! (1/9/09)

Ok I have to admit I am actually a little excited about the Vista redo Windows 7. Ballmer announced at CES that the beta will open up tomorrow and I am going to be all over it. Through some umm...resources I have been working with Windows 7 since last year when it was first announce and I gotta say it actually does what it is supposed to do. It is stable and it look good without tons of unnecessary crap... you know the way Vista should have been. I am watching the keynote right now so I can't really make any rants but I will definately do a vs between Ballmer and Schiller a bit later. So guys lets get ourselves ready for another big Windows release!

Here is the link to where the beta is supposed to release :
