New Year's 07/08 Sparkler Bomb

Here is what Dirk and I did this New Years lol. We set the old Christmas tree on fire lol.

Gonna blow something up tonight!!

Tonight is one of my favorite times of year. Time when it is legal to pop fireworks. I am so excited. Dirk and I are gonna hook up...purchase some toys lol and then blow some crap up. I have loved New Years since I was a kid because of this. I remember Dad use to sleep until 11:59pm and then run outside with his shotgun and fire off shots at midnight lol. I was always perfectly happy with bottle rockets and firecrackers. And then that one year Dad bought me mortars muuuuhuuuhaaaa lol.

When I got older my middle brother Johnny and I use to have a tradition. During the week between Christmas and New Years we would make a trip to South of the Border to pick up supplies. Then New Years night I would either spend the night over his house or he would come to mom and dads house for us to explode them. I really miss those days. One of the unfortunate facts of life is when you get married somethings have to go away. Oh well. Happy New Years folks. I'll post some picks or vids next year lol.

Andy Andrews Explains Quixtar

I am going to (Lord help me) a Winters Meeting this coming weekend. Seriously I figure I haven't completely sold myself over so this year I want to to see what I am really capable of. If it doesn't work it will not be because of lack of effort on my part but I am truly hoping for the best.

CompUSA -- So long old friend .*sniff, sniff

By now I am sure you know but all the CompUSA stores are closing up. I stopped by my local store (1 hour away) just to see how the sales were going. So far only 10-30% off. I am hoping in the next couple weeks it will drop severely. But here is why it is an old friend.

One of the people that really pushed me to be a Mac fan boy was a guy name Mr. Robert (Bob) Wright back in my Portsmouth Public Schools days. The things I learned to do with that machine sucked me right into the mac world. Anywho one day with the computer club we went to CompUSA on the way to a tournament. (Im a geek shutup lol) That was the day I became a man lol. Seriously that store was the most awesome store I had ever been in. You have to keep in mind that this was back when all they sold was computer stuff. The hard to find gadgetry that I grew to love. I miss those days.

So to all my CompUSA brotheren, I am sorry for your loss and I will light a candle every year after the day it closes.

Mental Dump

Okay, here is what is going on in the old brain right now:

- My office is dirty as hell -- I so have to get this place organized before the new school year starts

- I have fell off in my businesses so I am going to 3 day seminar to pull me back on track.

- Linear Algebra is gonna suck a$$ - I am actually going to have to start studying again.

- I have to get to moms house to finish cleaning out my old closest. I am so not looking forward to doing this. So much crap.

- I need to wash clothes - I just dont want to lol

- I should at least play the game I rented and is now overdue to take back.

- Q is bothering me a bit because he keeps contacting my wife. I know I have nothing to worry about but it is just bothering me. He is my brother and I love him but stop texting/calling my wife so much I mean damn.

- I can't wait for my new glasses to get hear though I'd rather get the lasik surgery so I will never need glasses again.

- This winter break has been way to small and everything starts right back up as soon as the new year starts.

Ok now were to start lol.

Mrs. Cross

Ok guys this one is a hard one for me to talk about but I need to get this out. Two weeks ago now my mother in-law past very suddenly. Though it was due to cancer, it wasn't supposed to be that bad according to the doctors. Yes it has been hard for my wife and I. Sony and Ma were very close. I mean they called each other at least once a day if not more to just see how each other was doing. I had never experienced that type of parental relationship until I met my wife. It was truly an amazing thing to see and be apart of. But here is what I wanted to say.

Many of you don't know that my father was a bit crazy. Ok he wasn't playing with a full deck when it came to relationships and emotions. He dealt in anger mainly. Back in my first senior year of college I hit a personal low. I actually wanted to stay out of school for a semester to get my head together. Dont get me wrong. I had a full time job, good grades and all. I just needed a semester to breathe. Well when I told my folks...cross that, when I told my mom she ran down stairs and told my dad and dad promptly said "get your shit and get out of my house." That is right folks I was kicked out of the house because I wanted to take a semester off from college. Not that I was a bad son or wasn't working or selling drugs or getting girls pregnant. Oh no...because I wanted to take one f-ing semester off.

To say the least my entire life was thrown up in the air. I didn't know what to do or where to go. Just imagine that. The security blanket of your parents and your home reject you. That is a big pill to swallow. One I still have problems with to this day sometimes. Well that night Mrs. Cross actually took me in.

I don't want you to think of this in a little way. I was the boyfriend of her daughter. Mrs. Cross was also a very devout Jehovahs Witness. Here comes this "worldly boy" as she would say, and she took me in. (She did call her dad first to see what he thought (she was almost 50 and she called her dad for his opinion...hmm that is a special woman)). The fact that she helped me always meant so much to me. I was very fortunate to get the opportunity the night before she passed to let her know that. It wasn't that I was expecting her to pass, you could just talk to her like that.

Well Mrs. Cross --Ma, you will be missed, appreciated, respected, and most importantly loved for the rest of my days.

~J

P.S.
She told me I was "Ok for a worldly boy" and you know what, that is good enough for me.

Lyrics Stuck in my Head

For some reason the lyrics from Aerosmiths "Get A Grip" CD are stuck in my head. 1st track before Eat the Rich lol.

"Wake up kids your half past your youth and ain't nothing really changing but the date. You're a grand slammer, but you're no Babe Ruth. You got to learn how to relate. Or you will be swinging from the pearly gates. You got ...(something I cant remember) low and behold. You got the right key baby but the --wrong --key --whole --yo..."

Ok maybe now I can focus on class lol.

(From my wife) - Duties of a Wife

Duties of a Wife

Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given
their new wives duties.

The 1st man had married an Asian woman

and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and house cleaning. He said it took a couple of days but on the 3rd day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were done.

The 2nd man had married a White woman.

He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. On the 1st day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the 3rd day, his house was clean, the dishes were done and he had a huge dinner on the table.

The 3rd man married a Black woman.

He boasted that he had told her that her duties were to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the 1st day he didn't' see anything, the 2nd day he didn't see anything but by the 3rd day most of the swelling had gone down and he
could see a little out of his left eye; enough to fix himself a bite
to eat, load the dishwasher and call a landscaper.

Gotta love those Black women!!!!

Network Marketing - Good thing or Bad thing?

Like I said in some previous posts, my wife and I have started a couple businesses. The main thing we are looking to accomplish is a residual income so that we don't have to rely on our 9-5's so much. The one Sony found is Pre-paid Legal. PPL does for legal services what heath insurance does for medical services. In other words for $26.00 a month you can have your own legal services. It is pretty awesome! The catch is I need to do network marketing in order to actually make some money. In truth that is what all businesses do but for me it is just so hard to actually do that. I even got small business certified thinking it would be easier to work with businesses because they obviously need the services. Well--though they need it it is a pain to get through to this business owner who is working a shoe string budget that a monthly service fee could help grow and protect their business. All they think is "what are you here to sell me?" I understand where they are coming from but if your business can't afford $40.00 a month, then you have other issues, you know what I mean lol.

Anyway what I really wanted to say in this post is that I feel like I should really offer the business if not then at least the service to my family and friends. The catch is that I don't want to be one of those people that seem like I want to abuse the trust in the relationships that I have made. I really want to help these people if for no other reason than to say once I have made it, I gave you a chance to make it with me. I don't know. What do you guys think??

~J

BTW- if you really do what some more info on this just shoot me an email (jeaime@powellprivilege.com) or give me a call.

I have got to make a change

Well I'm guessing what little audience I had built is probably not going to see this so this if for me. I kind of need to get some things out.

Some how in the last few months I have lost myself. Between the new job, the new house, the new businesses I have lost what really makes me well-me. During the day i am running around for work trying to make sure that there is no need for anyone to be looking for me because what ever it is that they may ask me to do is already done. The job isn't really stressful until some type of conference is going on so that shouldn't bug me. Yet I feel like there is something missing. I should be doing more because I know the Greenland trip is coming up sooner than I really want it to.

School has actually been pretty easy and yet I feel like I am not really applying myself the way I should. I do my work I just don't take it to that next level that I have always prided myself on doing. That extra bit that truly makes the professor go "Wow".

I feel like I have let my wife down in a way that I can't really explain. In high school I was always full of ideas and prospects but they have seemed to fade with time. I wanted to be an extraordinary husband. I wanted to be the one that other wives get jealous over. I feel like I am just like any of the other ones just doing the bare minimum to make her not fuss.

Then there are my businesses. I see the possibilities of making them work but getting doors shut in my face time after time has lead me to believe that I (not my services) are the problem. It is a hard thing to deal with when you feel like you are a failure.

I won't even talk about my friends and family. I feel like I have neglected them. I don't call regularly. I don't invite them over for dinner or do things that I always saw myself doing as an adult.

I mean I can't even figure out what I want to do with my life! I'm 28 and I just plain don't know. Can I do a lot of things, yes. Do I want to do a lot of things,,,no. What the freak is that???

I can't keep doing the same thing. I have to make some dramatic changes in my life before it is to late. I have to prioritize. I have to set some new goals. I have to accept some new challenges. I have to reach for a new ring. The great part is that I recognize the problem, now I just have to tackle it. Now just where to start???

X-Wing Fighter Rocket

Im coming back I promise...things are finally starting to slow down a bit.

~~In Memory of Sadie P.

My grandmother Sadie P passed away today. I know immediate feelings of condolences and things come to might but although they appreciated they kind of aren't needed. Grandma was my fathers mother. For some reason my family wasn't really close to that side of the family. Not all of them but a lot of them. Sadie P kind of fell into the same category. There was some bad blood between my dad and Grandmother. I think some thing happened in his childhood but the main issue I knew about was a disagreement about a house deed. Either way the only time I really saw Grandma was at funerals, Christmas, weddings, or if she needed something fixed at the house. The bad part is that Grandma lived about 5 mins away from my home. I dont want this post to be negative though. I wanted to share one memory from my childhood that happened because I stayed at my grandmothers house. I actually think it was the only time I ever stayed at my grandmothers house. Anyway I was around 6 or 7 during this particular summer. Next to my grandmother lived a family with another little girl about my age. From what I can remember the girl was brown skin with fish eye glasses. At the same time we were kids so we didn't care what we looked like, we just wanted to play lol.

The way we actually got to play was that a pretty bad summer storm came up. Once it had passed I of course decided to go jump in some puddles. While I was out there the little girl came out and started playing in the mud too. She was a girl after my own heart so we started to play lol. We ended up finding this little area of dirt that had not been covered by grass and we made the coolest mud castle. For two days we worked on our mud castle, bringing in cups of water to keep the mud wet. To say the least we had a blast.

On my grandmothers behalf as dirty as I got she did nothing but laugh at me when I came in for lunch or dinner. She cleaned me up fed me and sent me back out to have the time of my life. Got to admit that was a pretty awesome stay at grandma's house.

Ok one more story that she and I laughed about though it was pretty serious. Grandma started loosing her eye sight a couple years ago. On her way home after she had her first surgery to clear out some of the blockages, she hit her self in the good eye getting out of the car. My father my grandmother and I laughed so hard about that. You have to realize that my grand mother had this very distinctive laugh. It was a deep guttural laugh that kind of started and stopped rhythmically. Her laugh kind of forced you laugh along with her.

I will miss that laugh but I am so glad that she is no longer in pain. Rest in peace grandma --rest in peace.

Setting up an imaging/drive cloning server

I work in a lab with over thirty computers. Students and Faculty both use these computer heavily. To say the least they get very junked up. I decided to implement a new way to reload the system instead of each one from scratch or buy manually connecting drives to use an old version of Norton Ghost. With a little bit of searching I came upon a program named G4U which stands for Ghost for Unix with no relation to Norton Ghost. G4U is a Unix-based (or G4L which is Ghost for Linux-based) app that will clone drives to a FTP server. Sweet!! It Seemed easy. I had a Mac with OSX. I turned on the FTP server from system preferences, and I downloaded and burn the G4U ISO created the "install" user account with admin privileges. I booted off the burned CD and --errors!! Many funky errors. With some research I found that the FTP server built into OS X is a stripped down version of the original Darwin client. I ended up having to use another ftp server that is also built-in but I configured it through an open-source GUI name Pure-FTPd Manager. 5 minutes. No lie, 5 minutes and I had it up and running but there was one trick. You have to create an "install" user in the Pure-FTPd Manager. (I also want to thrown in there that if you don't use the default folder for saving the images...you will need to change what ever folder you want to use to read+write in the Virtual folders tab) So lets go through the steps:
  1. Download and burn the G4U ISO
  2. Download and install Pure-FTPd Manager
  3. Create a virtual user named "install"
  4. Find the computer's local ip address from the network icon in system prefrences. (Even though it is listed in the status screen of Pure-FTPd that is the public address which may not always work depending on your firewall)
  5. Boot the computer from the G4U CD you burned.
  6. To create/upload an image type
     uploaddisk ipaddress filename.gz
    1. To restore from an image type
       slurpdisk ipaddress filename.gz
  7. Restart the computer
I hope this helps!!

Blackle --Google environmentally freindly!

Global warming blah blah blah.....ice caps melting blah blah blah....Earth needs our help. Ok sweet I'm all set to do what I can. Now what can my broke a$$ do to actually help? I want an electric car, but I can't afford one. I want compact fluorescents but they are like $5.00 a pop, and I would need almost 20 of them. I'd love to buy a LCD to save energy but my CRT is working fine, and I think I would prefer to eat this month lol.

Ok so here is what you can do, but first a quick technology lesson (You want some cheese with that wine?? lol ). CRTs work by basically shooting by photons at a phosphorus screen. It takes three of those guns, one for each color Red, Green, and Blue. That takes a lot of energy. The closer to white the color, the more power it takes. Now some quick stats. Google is searched almost 200 million times a day globally. We all know, and love the clean basic look of the regular Google interface. Well that interface is primarily white. Now if that background color was changed to black so none of those guns were used, there could be a power saving of over 750 megawatt hours per year. So less carbon emissions from coal burning power plants; therefore we help save the earth. Awesome. So why don't they do it?

Well keep in mind Google has probably done studies, and paid millions of dollars to see what colors look best on their site. So they aren't changing crap lol. (I do want to say that in their defence Google has covered every available area on the roofs of their campus with solar panels.)

There is an alternative though, Blackle.com. It is Google with an environmental twist. So finally after all that you can save power by simply changing your search habits by going to Blackle.com . There ya go, and that won't cost you a dime. Now if they only had an iBlackle lol.

CReSIS All-Hands Retreat

I had to write a blurb for our web page so I figured I might as well post it on my blog so you all know what I am doing. BTW The GRID part is me lol.

Held in the scenic town of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, the purposes of the CReSIS All-Hands Retreat were to both decide which experiments were going to take place in the field, and secondly to allow the faculty and staff of CReSIS to meet.

The fieldwork consists of Polar Study Seasons in both Greenland, and Antarctica. The Greenland study will take place in either May or June of 2008 before the ice begins to thaw. During this time the seismic studies of the ice sheets will be taken to assist in learning of the structure of the ice sheets. This research along with core samples will allow 3-D models to be designed that will be used to track ice sheet movement, and melting. Two portable GRID computer systems will be field tested during this time to process raw data. This data will then be used to help decide the next day’s selection of study area. The Antarctic study will take place in November or December of 2008. During the Antarctic study the debut of an 1100 pound unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will highlight the study session. This UAV will primarily be utilized to study glaciers, which are not safe for on-the-ground human study. The then perfected portable GRID will process the data directly from the UAV storage devices to select the next study area.

The secondary purpose of the retreat was communication. Scientist, and technologist often have a disconnect to the big picture of how a project that is being worked on, relates to others. The retreat allowed those multiple subsections of CReSIS to meet, and to establish dialogues. Sensor staff met with robotics staff. GRID specialist met with data processing staff. Radar specialist met with power staff. Due to the realized need for a centralized repository of information about the different persons who work on the CReSIS project, a decision for an on-line profile for every member was added as a goal for the technology group. Along with student mapping these additions by far will add to the success of the research project by opening those doors of communication across areas of specialization.

I am not alone lol

So I am down in MO for a CReSIS conference. The whole point of this conference is for fellow scientist and researchers to meet so we can make sure we are all on the same page or at least in the same book--ok at least the same state lol. Anyway big words abound and plans are unrolled and rolled back. Mean while I'm sitting there going what the hell. Yeah ummm I didn't know about any of that lol. Apparently my whole job at EC is revolving around research for CReSIS. Cool, now I know lol. So anyway last night some of the conference members and myself gathered together to watch a movie and ind of get to know each other a bit better. Well I was talking to one person when I just couldn't take it anymore. I asked the all important question. "What the hell are we supposed to be doing?lol" She fell out laughing and said "you too?? I thought it was just me lol. " So apparently we need to make a key item on the agenda "What you should know about CReSIS when you Begin" or some type of orientation thing cause everyone is lost accept the older professors that have been in it from the beginning. So basically here is what I have to do as far as I have figured out. My job is to take data and process it using MATLAB on the GRID. I am supposed to make two portable GRID systems for deployment in Greenland next summer and then again in Antarctica next December. Sweet ok now I can deal with that. Now one question...how do I use MATLAB lol?? I know I will get there but this is gonna take some hard work ..but hey, at least it is educational work instead of corporate crap.

New iMacs Whoot!! I'm so getting one --or 10--for the lab lol

So I was watching the text feed from the Apple Summer Press conference on Engadget. (I'm an Apple fan boy, what can I say lol) Brother Steve decided to revamp the entire iMac line. Now why this is so important to me is because I just got my boss to sign off on purchasing a few new 17" iMacs. Well brother Steve must have heard my prayer because he axed the 17" model and replaced it with a 20" model at the same rice point with improved specs!!! The other cool thing is the look. Aluminum and glass, I should repeat it like a Chinese monk aluminum and glass--aluminum and glass lol. The new iMac is the hotness and I'm getting one. High-ho diddly!!! Thanks Brother Steve and all hail Apple lol.

Penguins everywhere!!

I saw this on my way home from work, and couldn't help but take a pict of it. Have churches gotten to the point that they need a gimmick to get people to come? I can just imagine the church meeting where this was thought up.

Church Deacon: "It will be like March of the Penguins --for Jesus!"

Church Pastor: "How much will it cost?"

Church Deacon: "Don't worry about it. Big Lots is having a plastic penguin sale."

Church Pastor: "Buy them all! Buy them all now!!"

How to install a LaserWriter 630 Pro in Vista

Ok so an old LaserWriter 630 Pro was surplussed out here at work and I decided to pick it up, because I know the things are like tanks. Well that and the fact that I know how to work on the Canon/HP/Apple printer engine without a problem. Anyway lol, I reloaded 32-bit Vista Premium, because Ubuntu/Wine was pissing me off with World of WarCraft, and Guild Wars. I said all that to say this, the Apple Drivers are not included in the Vista install. They are in XP but not in Vista so what the hell. I did some searching on the inter-webs (lol) with out luck so I figured screw it I will use the XP drivers, and damn if it didn't work. Here is how I did it.

  1. Insert XP OS CD, and cancel out of any of the autoplay crap. (Note: In my case I used Disc 1 of my XP Media Center Edition)
  2. Goto Windows logo button (Old Start) -->Control Panel --> Printers
  3. Click "Add Printer"
  4. Select "Local Port" and click "Next"(Note: Only select Network if you are printer sharing to another computer with a LaserWriter)
  5. "LPT 1" and click "Next" (Note:If you are using some type of Print Server you may either need to create a Standard TCP/IP port or select the proprietary port for your printer server.)
  6. In the driver window select "Have Disk"
  7. Click "Browse"
  8. Under "Look In" select your CD-Rom with the Windows CD in it and choose the "i386" folder and click "OK"
  9. After a second of loading, the XP drivers should be listed in which you can select "Apple", and which ever LaserWriter you have.
  10. Finish the "Add Printer Wizard", and boom-bam you have your LaserWriter again!!
I think the Windows 2000 Pro CD will also work the same way, because the driver didn't change between the 2K and XP but I did not test that.

Letting Canon Go

Friday the guys from Canon put together a party for me. First of all this was the first job that a party was ever thrown for me. Actually it is the only party I have ever had. I um....well that was pretty special for me but I'm not gonna get all emotional about this. I just wanna say you never really realize how involved you life is with a place until you leave it. I really truly do miss these guys. I also plan to make a conscious effort to stay in contact with them. Ok now for the stories lol.

Sandie found the pattern, and Dreeny knitted me a well--little Je'aime glove for the cold winters of the Antarctic lol. I will post a pict a bit later but it is awesome lol.

Lets see here, I also got Lance in a bit of trouble by faking wing man on him. Lol. I know Lance is married and Liz is great but the "Buttery Nipples" I had just made me act lol. (Sony, that is a drink I had--that comes in pairs lol. ) I tell you what though, if he was married, he woudl have so been in lol.

Talked with a girlie about her new hubby. Things are going rough with her hubby which I tried to warn her about. The first and second years of marriage are pure hell. You have to get to that point that you understand that you are two different people but no matter what dispute or argument you have, you know that divorce isn't even a concern. Then you can get to the point that you have that type of relationship in which love truly takes over. Marriage takes work. Hard work. If you aren't willing to put the work into it--don't get married!!

Beyond that, jokes flowed. Work stories abounded. And the laugh came until my cheeks hurt. I simply had the time of my life. Thanks so much guys for taking the time to come out. I had an absolute blast.

Oh yeah before I forget, I formally bequeath my harem to Dirk lol. Enjoy buddy lol!!

My last day at Canon

Here is the letter I sent out to all of my Canon friends. You never realize how difficult it is to write something like that until you have to.

Well guys it has been a great 4.5 years. I have made many friends, and have much respect for all of you. Unfortunately the time has come for me to take a different path. I have been debating what I should say in my last letter. I was gonna come up with this cool thing where I used song lyrics, but I decided against it. Then I decided to put in a picture of some of the cool stuff I was going to do in Antarctica, but I dropped that idea too. I dropped them because I didn't want to make a joke out of how much I am truly going to miss this place. I know the customers can get on your nerves, and even the politics of this place can get to you sometimes, but the simple fact is this place has been good to me. I have enjoyed every minute, and it is simply because you all made it all worth it! I am truly thankful for every experience, every trial, and every success because you all were there with me to help keep it fun. So before I drop a big man tear (lol) I just want to say thanks, good luck, and keep in touch. I will truly miss you all.

My iPhone Diary--well David Pogues Diary (the bastard lol)

I love the way this Dave does his reviews. I can't wait for his Leopard review.

iPhone Contest

So I am rolling up to VA listening to Mac Break Weekly. I knew it was going to be all about the iPhone that I can't have for a while when I hear Scott Bourne drop a plug for his Apple Phone Show web site (www.applephoneshow.com). He let out the news that he was going to attempt to purchase 12 iPhones on release day for testing, breakdown and (drum roll please) a conest. Holy mother of Steve Jobs I was all over it. A chance for my broke asphalt to get a free iPhone. Now I could tell you what I have to do to participate in the contest, but quite honestly I don't want you to do it, becasue I want that phone lol. So Scott, please for the love of all things holy please give me that phone. I tell ya what, I will give you my three (3) Commodore 64's , one (1) Commadore 128, a TRS 80, and a TI-99A with the rare peripheral upgrade back pack for one of those phones. I mean come on man I am desperate. I have no problems providing photos to prove I am serious. Please man, help a desperate geek out!!!

With Love
Jeaime

I want one damn it lol.

I hate being broke sometimes. I know the house is great and all but man do I want one Friday. Oh well I will do the responsible thing and wait until January 08. Even apps are out there. Dang it!!

The Booty Cooler by Thanko

I'm a big boy with a big booty. Let me tell you that after a 6 hour WoW fest my booty gets toasty. All my needs have been answered with the new USB powered Thanko butt cooling chair. Yes sir that's right the Booty cooler has truly allowed me to veg out as long as I have a constant supply of Coke Cola and Hot Pockets lol.

BP Sells Solar Panels!!

I ran across this site and just couldn't believe it. BP the petroleum company is actually selling affordable solar panels!! If that isn't a sign of a change coming, what is? I really want to add some to the house but that is a home equity loan away from fruition yet just the thought of buying free/clean energy from a gas company seems weird. Kind of like running Windows on a Mac with Apple Software--hummm, I need to go pray cause the end is truly near.

HBO Intro: Behind the Scenes

This brings back some memories from when I was a kid. My Dad read that it was horrible for kids to watch cartoons, but had no issues with me watching HBO (go figure lol). Anyway I remember seeing this time and time again. I can't believe that was all done by hand back in the day. (Did you catch that dial based cable box lol?)

Obama Girl video

Ok I am a bit worried at this point. Has it really come to this? I am so gonna write in Christopher Walken in 08 lol.

~~What this country needs is MORE COWBELL!!~~

I gotta stop worrying

ever since we bought the house it seems like I can't stop worrying about things. What needs to be bought, what needs to be unpacked, if Sony's mom will be OK, if my mom will be OK. It is just crazy. My head is swirling with all these things to the point I can't focus on any one task. My stomach is giving me problems, I have almost a constant headache and I can't just relax. Even WoW can't seem to chill me out. This weekend I have decided to to have some fun. The Mid-Atlantic Anime Con is this weekend and I plan to geek it up to just chill out. I really wish Sony would come but she has to work--and she thinks I am a geek but none the less I will press on. I hope this helps chill me out a bit.

How to make an Embarq 660R (ZyXel ADSL Modem) and a router (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, Belkin) forward ports

Ok I'm gonna get right to the point here. In case you didn't know the Embarq 660R is both a router and a firewall. Router to router equals hell on port forwarding. I also want to say if this does effect you just leave it alone. The Embarq and the router will co-exist for the most part but you will have a slight network slow down. I found this issue when I was trying to open up a port for XLink Kai to link Xbox's and stumbled upon why it wasn't working right after I purchased a new router (I also bricked my old one but that isn't important lol). I must also say though this worked for me I can't accept any responsibility for what happens to you but I will be glad to help as much as I can.

What we are going to be doing is setting the router to just be a wireless access point/hub and letting the Embarq do the DHCP address assigning and routing. (Note: There is another way to do this by turning the Embarq into a bridge and then setting up your router for PPoe connection but then you have to call Emarq to get all your username information in order to sign in which I didn't feel like doing at 1:00 in the morning).

Step 1: You need to log into the web interface of the router. to do that you need to type in the IP address of your router into your Web Browser (IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc...)
(Note: If you do not know the User Name and password of your router you are gonna need to either reset your router or give that company a call. The generic login was "admin" as the username with no password for my D-Link and Linksys default username is "administrator" and the password is "admin")

To get the IP address :

(Vista)-
1. Window Button
2.Type "CMD" in the Instant Search
3. Press Enter
4. Type "ipconfig"
5. Press Enter
6. The Gateway Address is the address of the router normally

(NT/2K/XP) -
1. Start
2. Run
3. Type "CMD"
4. Press Enter
5. Type "ipconfig"
6. Press Enter
7. The Gateway Address is the address of the router normally.

(NT/2K/XP) -
1. Start
2. Run
3. Type "Winipcfg"
4. The Gateway Address is the address of the router normally.

(Mac OSX)-
1. Open System Preferences
2. Click "Network"
3. Select your network type (Airport or Ethernet)
4. Click "TCP/IP" button
5. Router Address

(Linux/UNIX)-
1. Open a terminal window
2. Type "ifconfig -a"
3. Press Enter
4. If I remember correctly the "Bcast" should be the router IP

Step 2: Once you log in you need to view the IP address of the Embarq router your wireless router is connecting to or in other words, the WAN settings.

(Note: In the case of the D-Link and Linksys I just went to the "Status" tab and the WAN IP address was listed including the server. It should be 192.168.2.1 or at least it was for me.)

Step 3: Set your router to be an assess point. (In my case for a D-Link WBR 2310 I simply logged in and a check box was on the home screen)

Step 4: Restart your computer and make sure you can still see the internet. (If you already know how to renew your DHCP address you can simply do that but I didn't know how for all the OS's so I gave you the easiest) (Note: If your computer has a static or hard set IP address you will need to change it to a DHCP. Most computers should already be set to DHCP unless you have a network admin in which case he/she should be doing this anyway. Hopefully you already know how to do this but if not just take a look at the support forums for which ever OS you have.)

Step 5: Find your computer's new IP address using the procedure from Step 1. (You will need this address to know where to forward the port or ports to.)

Step 6: Log in to the Embarq modem by typing in the address in to your browser that you got from your router.
(Note: The initial password should already be typed in so just press enter again to log in. The next screen has you assign a password of your choosing.)

I want to warn you that in my case I had to log in over and over again. If after any selection you make you get a login window, it didn't hold the setting. Just warning you!!

Step 7: On the main ZyXel screen select NAT.

Step 8: Type in the port forwarding information and make sure to type in the correct IP address of the computer you want to forward to and click "Save Settings". (Once again if the login window comes up it DID NOT ACCEPT YOUR CHANGES!!! and you must do it again.)

Step 9: Test that app or device out!!

I owe Linksys an apology. Well--not completely.

After my tiraid yesterday morning I went home and set up my poppin fresh D-Link BRW-2310. When I got my DHCP address I saw it was a 192.168.2.x IP. I know this doesn't mean anything to most people but as a tech that seemed like a weird subnet to assign. Then again I though this was my first D-Link so that must be how they do it. I then went to open up the Web Interface and saw "ZyXel" as the brand name. Once again this should be a D-Link but what ever. Turned on the NAT to forward to my IP address and boo-bam I could connect just fine to Dirks XLink Kai server. Sweetness. My XBOX 360 connects through WIFi along with my Wii. I needed to get the both up but for some freaky reason the GUI had no wireless setting so I figured it should work fine. WRONG. The D-Link comes with this funky third party software called "Network Magic"(that is such a 90's software name) that is supposed to let you configure the router. It couldn't find the freggin router. What the hell?? After about 30mins of fiddling I figured I'd give D-Link a call. The lady and I tried all kinds of crap for about 45mins when she finally said "lets unplug your DSL modem." That shouldn't have an effect but what ever. Unplugged the modem, reset the router and boom I got a 192.168.0.x subnet. I went to the web interface and it was D-Link. To lay it all out what happened is the Embarq 660R (ZyXel 660r ADSL) modem is also a router and firewall. Sure would have been helpful for Embarq to send some documentation that said that.

So I said all that to say this. The problem was in the Embarq modem all along. I'm gonna post after this one how I actually had to get everything running, but I did wanna say ummm, well, I'm sorry Linksys. Don't get me wrong you have given my hell before but this time it wasn't your fault. Friends?? lol (Send me some free swag Linksys guys lol)

Here is the story of Matt Harding on GMA

Wow I so want to do this. That would be so great.

Where the Hell are Matt's Outtakes

For some reason I just really like this.

Edward's Super-Powered Wifi/GPRS laptop

Edward---you are a Wardriving legend buddy lol.

I bricked my router

Last night I decided to hook up with Dirk and Lance to play a little Halo 2 on through this program named XLink Kai. Setup seemed easy enough. Downloaded installed found Dirks server. And as I tried to connect it booted me because the connection could not be established. No biggie probably just need to open up the port. Didn't help. Oh maybe it is the Windows Firewall so I turned that off--no luck. Maybe my PC is just screwed so I will try it on my Mac. Same deal. Keep in mind this is not the first time I have had such an issue with my Linksys - - so I decided to update the firmware from Linksys. No dice. So at this point I have nothing to loose. I decided to try a third party firmware I had found online. It supposedly opens up the router to act like a $600 router. Sweet should solve all my problems. I told Lance and Dirk "I'll see you on the other side" and did the update. Well--time of death 11:30pm lol . I have purchased a new D-Link WBR 2310 to take its place because in all honesty I have kind of lost faith in Linksys. I use to love the company especially because they were an off shoot of Cisco. I have lost faith to the point that I am returning the brand new 16-port Linksys switch I just bought Monday, selling my Linksys Cable modem, and re-quoting a networking job I have.

I just cant deal with crap like that anymore. It isn't the old days of make it work anymore. network gear is relatively cheap so companies can't rest on their names and hope for consumers to follow suit. Screw you Linksys and thanks for the numerous link drops, lock-ups, programs blocks, and lots of restless nights of sleep!

BTW
In case I start getting any of those comments about saving my router. I already know I can, but if you are looking for a resource here ya go: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Recover_from_a_Bad_Flash I'm just done with my router ,and though I am probably going to bring it back from the dead, I am only going to use it as a network extender.

Sitting in the AirPort

Ok so Friday (yep this past Friday) my boss comes up to me and is like your going to New York next Wednesday for training. Never mind the fact that I am already in training for some stuff that had been delayed for over a year and a half. So here I am sitting in the airport restaurant waiting for my flight when I realized I havent posted on my blog in a while because of all the craziness going on right now with work and school. So I figured a good old fashioned update session was in order.

1. BFF cut and ran - After over 15 years of friendship my oldest and dearest friend said "I have to let the past go" and hasn't talked to me again. Dont get me wrong I understand where she is coming from because she is trying to get her life together after some really crappy things have occurred. it has really rocked me to my core but I am trying to let it go. I wish her nothing but the best. I guess a life long friend just isn't something that really happens.

2. The house has been closed on and is officially mine and Sony's. That is right the paper work is signed and this huge weight should be off my shoulders, but I am finding it hard to let go. It seems like I have held on to that stress for so long I can't quite just chill about the whole thing and enjoy it. Sony is so happy about it but I hate that thing 3 has kind of taking away from it for her.

3. My mother-in-law has been diagnosed with stage 3 lymph-node cancer. The good news here is that it is highly treatable. After a few months of hardcore treatment lord willing she will be ok.

Surreal Laundry Experience

Last night I was at a point in my dirty clothes in which action had to be taken lol. Honestly my new washer and dryer were supposed to be delivered and installed yesterday but or course it was delayed. Anyway I had to go was my clothes to get ready for my New York trip. I go down to the local spin rite place and I see something out of some kind of weird dream. White towels everywhere. I mean thousands of them and a truck full of more of them. Now hat in it self is a bit strange but the real crazy part was there were about 12 CO-EDs in there washing, drying, and folding them all. I mean blonde haired, short shorts and tank top type co-eds. I mean it was like the beginning of a bad penthouse letter or something. Now the funny part was the number of guys that suddenly had o wash their clothes lol. It was just strange but then again it may just be me. I decided to take a picture of it but I didnt want to freak them out or anything (like a car scaring a pack of birds lol) but there you go for my proof lol.

When your wife tells you you need to post--

House Construction Pictures
Ok guys and girls, it is totally my fault. The house final closing steps have been a bit crazy. First we are supposed to close Monday, then Wednesday, then Friday, then Wednesday again. Arghhh. On the positive side of things we finally have a drive way!!! And the back yard doesnt look like the moon anymore lol. Poor Sony though. She sunk the car down to the wheel wells our last day without a driveway. I mean all the way down lol. I got it out but good land girlie. Guys this has most definitely been a life lesson on patience but hopefully tomorrow it will all be over. Well accept the door in the bathroom and the glass wall, but the house will be in my name. Beyond that we are just trying to get settled. My mom is coming down for the first time this weekend now that it is safe enough for her to come with the new driveway and sidewalk. I am so excited. I think she is going to like it. I just hate she had to wait so long. Well I had better get back to unpacking. It will not be long till you hear from me again now that things have settled a bit.
Much love guys
~J

Dove Evolution -- See I told you she wasn't real

I gotta say this pretty crazy. The commercial does make a good point about why beauty conceptions are so screwed. I mean look at Oprah. We all remember her from the late 80's to early 90's. She was straight bama. Drop in a billion a boom you have a fairly attractive woman(maybe it is still just the money lol). but you know what I am saying. Cake on the makeup and tweak with Photoshop and anybody can look good. What happened to the natural beauties like my wife?? Why aren't they on TV and print media anymore? Maybe the true beautiful women have realized that a life like that is fake and so they don't go that route anymore. You know what? More power to them!!

(Dang Sony turning to the Lifetime channel at night has kicked up my estrogen levels lol)

Quest Completed -- Finally

After 5 levels of taunting me and a little help from CeCe, Dreeny, and Hoi; Chadow Fang Keep, Ragefire, and Black Fathom Deep instances, I finally finished this freggin quest!. I am so glad that one is over. It was kind of worth it for the polearm, but I can't even imagine how hellish the quest for my mount is going to be.

Linux in Mac OSX

Mac now has another OpenSource project to help users get rid of Vista. With the installation of the Finkle Project, Mac OSX can now run Linux binarys and apps natively. This is actually a pretty big deal because of the One laptop per child project, and the Windup computer project. Linux is going to grow in market share fairly quickly in 3rd world countries. Unless Microsoft wants to start giving away Windows, the new generation will grown up on Linux-based systems. With Finkle, the Mac users of the world will be able to tag along for the ride.

So now lets take count of what OS's the Mac can run natively.
1. Mac OS
2. UNIX
3. Windows
4. LINUX (Just Added! lol)
